UV Lamps in Gemstone and Diamond Testing
Shortwave and longwave ultraviolet lamps help gemologists observe fluorescence patterns that can support, but not single-handedly prove, a gem's identity or treatment status.
Shortwave vs longwave
Gemologists use both shortwave (254nm) and longwave (365nm) UV light because different gem species and treatments fluoresce differently under each wavelength, providing complementary clues.
What fluorescence can suggest
Certain fluorescence colours and patterns are associated with specific treatments or, in some cases, help distinguish natural from synthetic material, though reactions can vary and overlap between materials.
Not a standalone identification tool
UV fluorescence observations are a supporting clue used alongside microscopic examination, spectroscopy and other tests, not a definitive stand-alone method for identification or separating natural from lab-grown material.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Use both shortwave and longwave UV for a fuller picture
- ✓ Treat fluorescence findings as supporting evidence, not proof
- ✓ Combine UV observation with microscope and other instruments
