Diamond Basics
Princess Cut Diamonds Explained
The princess cut is a square modified brilliant prized for its sharp corners and efficient use of rough diamond.
Shape and facet structure
A princess cut typically has 57 to 76 facets arranged in a square or rectangular outline with pointed, unprotected corners. It yields more carat weight from rough than a round brilliant, which can make it better value per carat.
No formal cut grade
GIA does not assign an overall cut grade to princess cuts; judge light performance visually and rely on polish and symmetry grades plus table and depth percentages as guides.
Setting considerations
The pointed corners are vulnerable to chipping, so a four-prong setting that protects each corner is strongly recommended for everyday wear.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Ask whether prongs protect all four corners
- ✓ Check table and depth percentage ranges for brightness
- ✓ Compare polish and symmetry grades since no overall cut grade exists
