Sapphire Buying Guide: Natural vs Lab-Grown, Prices per Carat & Quality

Blue, pink, padparadscha and fancy sapphires: Kashmir and Ceylon origins, heat and diffusion, lab sapphire prices and carat premiums.

What is sapphire?

Sapphire is corundum in every colour except red; blue comes from iron and titanium. Hardness: 9 on the Mohs scale.

Colour and quality factors

Velvety medium-to-medium-dark blue is classic. Padparadscha (pink-orange) and pinks command premiums; yellow, green and colour-change stones are often more affordable. Avoid stones that look inky or grey.

Origins and natural (mined) stones

Kashmir (historic, very rare), Myanmar and Sri Lanka (Ceylon) carry premiums; Madagascar, Australia, Thailand and Montana are important sources.

Carat weight and size

Blue sapphires are more available in larger sizes than ruby; 2–5 ct centre stones are realistic, and prices rise steadily per carat above 1, 3 and 5 ct.

Prices per carat

Commercial heated blue: roughly $200–$1,500/ct. Fine heated Ceylon 2–5 ct: roughly $2,000–$10,000/ct. Unheated Burma or Kashmir: can reach $10,000–$100,000+/ct. Padparadscha: often $5,000–$30,000+/ct for fine stones. These are indicative retail ranges per carat gathered from published trade and auction reporting; real prices vary widely with colour, size, origin and treatment, and are not a Riakoob quote.

Natural vs lab-grown (synthetic)

Lab sapphire is identical corundum and widely used (also in watch crystals); typical cost about $1–$500/ct. Under US FTC guidelines a lab-made stone must be clearly described as laboratory-grown, laboratory-created or synthetic, never simply by the gem name.

Treatments you must know about

Heating is common. Beryllium or titanium lattice diffusion must be disclosed and lowers value significantly. Treatment disclosure is required; ask for it in writing and on the lab report.

Certification

For significant sapphire purchases, ask for a report from an independent lab such as GIA, AGL, SSEF or Gübelin stating natural or synthetic origin, any treatments and, where relevant, geographic origin.

Care and durability

Excellent for daily wear; safe in most ultrasonic cleaners unless fracture-filled.
