Oval Cut Diamonds: Shape, Bow-Tie and Fit

Ovals offer an elongated silhouette that can look larger per carat than a round, but they are prone to a visible bow-tie effect.

Elongation and finger coverage

Because ovals spread the same carat weight over a longer outline, they often appear larger face-up than a round brilliant of equal weight, flattering the finger.

The bow-tie effect

A dark, bow-tie-shaped shadow across the centre is common in elongated shapes including ovals, pears and marquises. Its severity varies stone to stone and should be checked in person or on video before buying.

No GIA cut grade

As with other fancy shapes, GIA does not give ovals an overall cut grade, so polish, symmetry and visual inspection carry more weight in the decision.

Buyer checklist

  • ✓ View the stone on video or in person for bow-tie severity
  • ✓ Check length-to-width ratio against your preferred look
  • ✓ Review polish and symmetry grades since cut is unscored
