Caring for Fine Jewelry: A Collector's Handbook
Storage, cleaning, insurance and servicing — how to keep diamonds, gold and gemstones brilliant for generations.
Everyday rules that prevent most damage
Put jewelry on last and take it off first — perfume, hairspray and lotion dull both metal and stones. Remove rings and bracelets before exercise, gardening, swimming and cleaning; chlorine attacks gold alloys and can pit mountings over time.
Cleaning at home, safely
Diamonds, sapphires and rubies: soak in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry. Emeralds, opals and pearls: wipe with a soft damp cloth only — never soak, never ultrasonics. When in doubt, bring the piece to a professional.
Storage and travel
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined box so diamonds don't scratch softer gems — or each other. Chains should be fastened before storing to prevent knots. When travelling, keep jewelry in your hand luggage, never in checked bags.
Insurance and servicing
Insure significant pieces at their appraised replacement value and update appraisals every two to three years as markets move. Have prongs and clasps checked annually — a five-minute inspection is what stands between you and a lost stone. Every Riakoob piece ships with an insured valuation to make this simple.
