Emerald Buying Guide: Natural vs Lab-Grown, Prices per Carat & Quality

Colombian, Zambian and Brazilian emeralds, jardin, oil and resin enhancement levels, lab-grown emerald prices and buying by carat.

What is emerald?

Emerald is green beryl coloured by chromium and/or vanadium. Hardness: 7.5–8 (but inclusions reduce toughness) on the Mohs scale.

Colour and quality factors

Pure green to slightly bluish green with strong saturation is most valued. Inclusions ('jardin') are expected; liveliness and colour matter more than clarity.

Origins and natural (mined) stones

Colombia (Muzo, Chivor, Coscuez) is the classic source; Zambia supplies bluish-green stones; Brazil, Afghanistan (Panjshir), Ethiopia and Zimbabwe also produce.

Carat weight and size

Fine emeralds above 2 ct are scarce; the emerald cut protects corners and is the traditional shape.

Prices per carat

Commercial: roughly $100–$1,500/ct. Fine 1–3 ct with minor oil: roughly $3,000–$15,000/ct. Top Colombian 'no oil': can exceed $20,000–$100,000+/ct. These are indicative retail ranges per carat gathered from published trade and auction reporting; real prices vary widely with colour, size, origin and treatment, and are not a Riakoob quote.

Natural vs lab-grown (synthetic)

Hydrothermal and flux lab emeralds (Chatham, Biron and others) are real beryl, often cleaner than natural; typically about $50–$500/ct. Under US FTC guidelines a lab-made stone must be clearly described as laboratory-grown, laboratory-created or synthetic, never simply by the gem name.

Treatments you must know about

Almost all emeralds are clarity-enhanced with oil or resin. Labs grade it None, Insignificant/Minor, Moderate or Significant — value falls as enhancement rises. Treatment disclosure is required; ask for it in writing and on the lab report.

Certification

For significant emerald purchases, ask for a report from an independent lab such as GIA, AGL, SSEF or Gübelin stating natural or synthetic origin, any treatments and, where relevant, geographic origin.

Care and durability

Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning, heat and harsh chemicals; protective settings help.
