Emerald Cut Diamonds: The Hall-of-Mirrors Effect
The emerald cut's step facets create a hall-of-mirrors play of light rather than the scattered sparkle of a brilliant cut, and it shows inclusions more openly.
Step-cut faceting
Instead of triangular and kite-shaped brilliant facets, the emerald cut uses long, rectangular step facets parallel to the girdle, producing broad flashes of light instead of fine sparkle.
Clarity shows more readily
The open table and large facets of an emerald cut make inclusions and even minor colour tints easier to see with the naked eye, so many buyers favour a higher clarity grade for this shape than for a round of similar size.
No overall cut grade
GIA does not grade emerald-cut diamonds for overall cut; proportions, polish and symmetry, and a direct visual check remain the best guide to performance.
