Diamond Clarity Enhancement: Laser Drilling and Fracture Filling
Some diamonds undergo laser drilling or fracture filling to improve apparent clarity, and these treatments must be disclosed because they affect value and care requirements.
Laser drilling
A fine laser channel can be bored into a diamond to reach a dark inclusion, which is then lightened or dissolved with acid, making the inclusion less visible. The drill hole itself is a permanent, identifiable feature under magnification.
Fracture filling
A glass-like substance can be injected into a surface-reaching fracture to reduce its visibility. The filling can be unstable — it may cloud or be damaged by heat from jewelry repairs such as resizing or soldering.
Disclosure and reports
Reputable labs identify these treatments and note them on the grading report. A treated diamond is not inferior in authenticity but should be priced and cared for differently than an untreated stone.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Ask directly whether a diamond is laser drilled or fracture filled
- ✓ Avoid ultrasonic cleaning and heat near a fracture-filled stone
- ✓ Confirm treatment disclosure appears on the grading report
