Diamond Basics
Diamond Cut: The Most Important C
Cut controls how a diamond reflects light. A great cut makes even a modest stone dazzle.
Cut grades
GIA grades round brilliants Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor; AGS uses Ideal (0) to Poor (10). Grades consider proportions, symmetry and polish.
Proportions to look for
For rounds, a table of roughly 54–58% and depth of 59–62.5% typically perform well. Fancy shapes have no official cut grade, so judge symmetry and light return with your eyes or ideal-scope images.
