Gemstones
Aquamarine and Morganite: The Beryl Family
Aquamarine and morganite are both varieties of beryl, the same mineral family as emerald, prized for pastel colour and good durability.
Shared mineral, different colour
Beryl is colourless in pure form; trace iron produces aquamarine's blue, while trace manganese produces morganite's pink. Both are more included-free on average than emerald, which also belongs to this family.
Treatment norms
Most aquamarine on the market is heat-treated to remove a yellowish or greenish tint and stabilise a pure blue. Morganite is also commonly heat-treated to improve pink saturation; both treatments are routine and stable.
Durability
At roughly 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, both stones are reasonably hard and suitable for rings, though they should still be protected from hard knocks.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Expect heat treatment as standard; ask for disclosure
- ✓ Compare saturation across several stones since pastel tones vary widely
- ✓ Check for eye-clean clarity, which is common and expected
