Diamond Basics

Cushion Cut Diamonds: Soft Corners, Vintage Appeal

The cushion cut pairs a square or rectangular outline with rounded corners, producing a soft, pillow-like silhouette with vintage roots.

Modified vs standard brilliant patterns

Cushion cuts can use a classic brilliant facet pattern or a modified pattern with chunkier facets, which changes the balance of brilliance versus larger flashes of light.

Crushed ice vs chunky faceting

Some cushions show a sparkly 'crushed ice' look from many small facets, while others show fewer, larger flashes. Neither is objectively better — it is a matter of preference best judged by viewing the stone.

Grading notes

Like other fancy shapes, cushions receive no overall GIA cut grade, so clarity can matter more since facet patterns may hide or reveal inclusions differently than a round brilliant.

Buyer checklist

  • ✓ Decide between crushed-ice and chunky faceting by viewing stones
  • ✓ Check length-to-width ratio for square vs rectangular preference
  • ✓ Inspect clarity under magnification since large facets can reveal inclusions
