Diamond Basics
Pear Shaped Diamonds: Balance and the Bow-Tie
The pear, or teardrop, combines a rounded end with a point, and its proportions determine both comfort in a setting and the visibility of a bow-tie shadow.
Symmetry matters most
Because a pear shape has only one axis of symmetry, even small deviations in the curve of each side are easy to spot. Good symmetry grades and a straight, centred point are signs of careful cutting.
Point protection
The narrow tip is thin and chip-prone, so a V-tip prong or protective setting is important for rings worn daily.
Orientation
Pears are commonly worn with the point toward the wearer's hand or outward; either is acceptable, and the choice is purely aesthetic.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Check symmetry grade and that both sides curve evenly
- ✓ Confirm the setting protects the pointed tip
- ✓ View for bow-tie effect before purchase
