Round Brilliant Cut: Why It Dominates
The round brilliant is the only shape with a formal GIA cut grade, thanks to decades of optical research into its 57–58 facets.
A mathematically optimised shape
The modern round brilliant uses 57 or 58 facets arranged to maximise brightness, fire and scintillation. Its proportions were refined through 20th-century optical studies rather than tradition alone.
The only shape with a GIA cut grade
GIA issues an Excellent-to-Poor cut grade only for standard round brilliants, because their symmetrical geometry allows light performance to be modelled reliably. Fancy shapes have no equivalent overall cut grade on a GIA report.
What to check on the report
Look at cut, polish and symmetry together, plus the proportions diagram, rather than relying on carat weight alone to judge beauty.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Confirm the report shows a cut grade (round only)
- ✓ Review polish and symmetry together, not cut alone
- ✓ Compare face-up brilliance in person or on video, not just numbers
