Precious metals
Gold, platinum, palladium and sterling silver (92.5% pure, stamp 925). Fine jewellery is made almost exclusively from these.
Alternative metals
Titanium, tungsten, stainless steel and cobalt are durable and inexpensive but cannot be easily resized and carry no precious-metal value.
Plated and filled
Gold-plated, vermeil and gold-filled items have only a thin gold layer over base metal and should never be sold as solid gold.
