Diamond Basics
What Does 'Clear' Mean in a Diamond?
'Clear' usually describes a colourless, transparent stone — a mix of colour grade, clarity and transparency.
Colourless vs. clear
Jewellers say a diamond is 'clear' when it shows no visible tint (colour grades D–F) and no visible inclusions. Technically, colour and clarity are graded separately.
Transparency and haze
Some diamonds look milky or hazy because of microscopic inclusions or strong fluorescence. A lab report may say 'clouds not shown' — ask to view the stone in daylight to confirm it looks crisp.
How to judge clarity of appearance
View the diamond face-up against white paper and then in natural light. A clear diamond looks bright and lively with sharp contrast between light and dark facets.
