Jewelry Scales: Accuracy and Calibration Basics
Accurate carat and gram weights depend on a properly calibrated scale, since even small errors can meaningfully affect a stone's perceived value.
Why precision matters
A gemological scale needs to read to at least 0.01 carat (or 0.001g for small stones) because carat weight directly affects price, and rounding errors can shift a stone across a common size break such as 0.99 to 1.00 carat.
Calibration weights
Reliable scales should be checked periodically against certified calibration weights, since drift from temperature, vibration or age can introduce small but meaningful errors over time.
Draft-free, level conditions
Even a well-calibrated scale needs a stable, level, draft-free surface to produce consistent readings; air currents and uneven surfaces are common sources of measurement error.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Confirm the scale reads to at least 0.01 carat precision
- ✓ Check calibration with a certified reference weight periodically
- ✓ Weigh on a stable, draft-free, level surface
