Zircon: A Natural Gem Often Confused With Cubic Zirconia
Natural zircon is a distinct mineral with its own brilliance and fire, unrelated to the lab-made diamond simulant cubic zirconia despite the similar name.
Not the same as cubic zirconia
Zircon is a naturally occurring mineral with notable fire and a relatively high refractive index. Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a lab-grown diamond simulant with no natural zircon content; the names are similar but the materials are unrelated.
Colour and heat treatment
Natural zircon occurs in brown and reddish tones but is commonly heat-treated to produce the popular blue and colourless varieties seen in jewelry; this treatment is standard and generally disclosed by reputable dealers.
Durability notes
At roughly 6–7.5 Mohs, zircon can be brittle and prone to chipping or abrasion at facet edges over time, so it is better suited to earrings and pendants than rings worn daily.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Do not confuse natural zircon with cubic zirconia
- ✓ Ask whether colour results from heat treatment
- ✓ Favour protective settings given the stone's brittleness
