Watch Movements: Mechanical, Automatic and Quartz

A watch's movement — the mechanism driving its hands — fundamentally shapes its accuracy, maintenance needs and collectability.

Mechanical movements

Mechanical movements use a wound mainspring, gear train and escapement to measure time, requiring manual winding and periodic servicing, but are prized by collectors for their craftsmanship and heritage.

Automatic (self-winding) movements

Automatic movements add a rotor that winds the mainspring from the natural motion of the wearer's wrist, reducing the need for manual winding, though the watch will still need servicing roughly every several years.

Quartz movements

Quartz movements use a battery-powered oscillating crystal, offering excellent accuracy and low maintenance at a typically lower price point, though they generally carry less prestige in traditional watch collecting circles than mechanical movements.

Buyer checklist

  • ✓ Ask which movement type a watch uses before buying
  • ✓ Factor in servicing intervals for mechanical and automatic watches
  • ✓ Consider quartz for low-maintenance accuracy versus mechanical for heritage appeal
