Turquoise: Natural, Stabilised or Imitation?
Most turquoise on the market is stabilised or dyed. Here's how to tell the difference.
Grades of treatment
Natural untreated turquoise is rare. Stabilised turquoise is impregnated with resin for durability. Reconstituted and dyed howlite are imitations.
Quick checks
Dye often collects in cracks; scratching an inconspicuous area may reveal white material. A lab test is the only certain answer.
