Tourmaline Buying Guide: Natural vs Lab-Grown, Prices per Carat & Quality
Paraíba, rubellite, watermelon and green tourmaline: copper-bearing neon blues, carat premiums and prices.
What is tourmaline?
Tourmaline is a complex borosilicate group with the widest colour range of any gem. Hardness: 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale.
Colour and quality factors
Copper-bearing neon blue-green 'Paraíba' tourmaline is the top; rubellite red-pink and chrome green are prized; bi-colour watermelon slices are collectible.
Origins and natural (mined) stones
Brazil (Paraíba state), Nigeria and Mozambique (copper-bearing), Afghanistan, Madagascar and the US.
Carat weight and size
Paraíba over 1 ct is scarce; common colours are available in large sizes.
Prices per carat
Common green/pink: roughly $50–$500/ct. Rubellite: roughly $200–$1,500/ct. Mozambique Paraíba-type: roughly $2,000–$20,000/ct. Top Brazilian Paraíba: can exceed $50,000/ct. These are indicative retail ranges per carat gathered from published trade and auction reporting; real prices vary widely with colour, size, origin and treatment, and are not a Riakoob quote.
Natural vs lab-grown (synthetic)
No commercial lab tourmaline; simulants include glass and treated apatite. Under US FTC guidelines a lab-made stone must be clearly described as laboratory-grown, laboratory-created or synthetic, never simply by the gem name.
Treatments you must know about
Heating and irradiation are common; Paraíba is often heated; fracture filling occurs. Treatment disclosure is required; ask for it in writing and on the lab report.
Certification
For significant tourmaline purchases, ask for a report from an independent lab such as GIA, AGL, SSEF or Gübelin stating natural or synthetic origin, any treatments and, where relevant, geographic origin.
Care and durability
Durable enough for rings with care; avoid sudden heat.
