Opal Buying Guide: Natural vs Lab-Grown, Prices per Carat & Quality

Black, boulder, crystal and Ethiopian opal: play-of-colour, doublets and triplets, lab (Gilson) opal and prices per carat.

What is opal?

Opal is hydrated amorphous silica; precious opal diffracts light into 'play-of-colour'. Hardness: 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale.

Colour and quality factors

Value rests on body tone (black opal is most valuable), brightness, pattern (harlequin is rare) and red fire.

Origins and natural (mined) stones

Australia (Lightning Ridge black opal, boulder opal), Ethiopia (Welo, hydrophane), Mexico (fire opal) and Brazil.

Carat weight and size

Opals are often sold by carat but also by piece; large bright stones command high prices.

Prices per carat

Ethiopian: roughly $20–$300/ct. Australian crystal/boulder: roughly $100–$2,000/ct. Fine black opal: $2,000–$15,000+/ct. These are indicative retail ranges per carat gathered from published trade and auction reporting; real prices vary widely with colour, size, origin and treatment, and are not a Riakoob quote.

Natural vs lab-grown (synthetic)

Lab-created opal (Gilson and others) shows a regular 'snakeskin' pattern under magnification; usually tens of dollars per carat. Doublets and triplets are assembled stones and must be disclosed. Under US FTC guidelines a lab-made stone must be clearly described as laboratory-grown, laboratory-created or synthetic, never simply by the gem name.

Treatments you must know about

Smoke and sugar-acid treatments darken body colour; Ethiopian hydrophane absorbs water and may change temporarily. Treatment disclosure is required; ask for it in writing and on the lab report.

Certification

For significant opal purchases, ask for a report from an independent lab such as GIA, AGL, SSEF or Gübelin stating natural or synthetic origin, any treatments and, where relevant, geographic origin.

Care and durability

Soft and sensitive: never ultrasonic or steam; avoid knocks, heat and chemicals.
