Lapis Lazuli: An Ancient Rock, Not a Single Mineral
Lapis lazuli is technically a rock composed of several minerals, valued for its deep blue colour and historic use in pigments and jewelry.
A rock, not a mineral
Lapis is primarily composed of the mineral lazurite along with calcite and often flecks of golden pyrite; its composite nature means quality varies significantly by deposit and piece.
Quality factors
The finest lapis shows deep, even royal-blue colour with minimal white calcite veining and fine, evenly distributed pyrite flecks; heavy white veining generally lowers value.
Common treatments
Lower-grade lapis is sometimes dyed to even out colour or wax-coated to improve appearance; reputable sellers should disclose any such stabilisation.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Examine for excessive white calcite veining
- ✓ Ask whether the piece has been dyed or wax-stabilised
- ✓ Expect moderate hardness (around 5–5.5), so avoid harsh impacts
