How to Read Hallmarks and Metal Stamps
Small stamps reveal metal purity, maker and sometimes the assay office and year.
Common marks
750, 585 and 375 for 18K, 14K and 9K gold; 950 for platinum; 925 for sterling silver. Swiss and UK hallmarks include an official assay office symbol.
Red flags
'GP', 'GF', 'HGE' or 'RGP' mean plated or filled. A purity stamp without a maker's mark can be a warning sign.
