Garnet Buying Guide: Natural vs Lab-Grown, Prices per Carat & Quality

What is garnet?

Garnet is a family of silicate minerals including pyrope, almandine, spessartine, grossular (tsavorite) and andradite (demantoid). Hardness: 6.5–7.5 on the Mohs scale.

Colour and quality factors

Red garnets are common; vivid green tsavorite and demantoid ('horsetail' inclusions) and orange 'Mandarin' spessartite command premiums.

Origins and natural (mined) stones

Kenya and Tanzania (tsavorite), Russia and Namibia (demantoid), Namibia and Nigeria (spessartite), India and Sri Lanka.

Carat weight and size

Tsavorite over 2 ct and demantoid over 1 ct are rare; red garnets are plentiful in large sizes.

Prices per carat

Red garnet: roughly $20–$500/ct. Spessartite: roughly $200–$1,500/ct. Tsavorite: roughly $500–$8,000/ct. Fine demantoid: $2,000–$10,000+/ct. Natural vs lab-grown (synthetic)

Lab-grown garnet gems are uncommon commercially; YAG and GGG are synthetic garnet-structure materials used as simulants. Under US FTC guidelines a lab-made stone must be clearly described as laboratory-grown, laboratory-created or synthetic, never simply by the gem name.

Treatments you must know about

Garnets are typically untreated, though demantoid may be heated. Treatment disclosure is required; ask for it in writing and on the lab report.

Certification

For significant garnet purchases, ask for a report from an independent lab such as GIA, AGL, SSEF or Gübelin stating natural or synthetic origin, any treatments and, where relevant, geographic origin.

Care and durability

Good for most jewelry; softer demantoid needs protection.
