Garnet: More Than Just Red
Garnet is a group of related minerals spanning deep red to vivid green, including the rare colour-change variety.
A group, not a single mineral
Garnet refers to a family of chemically related species — including pyrope, almandine, spessartite, grossular and andradite — which together produce colours from red and orange to vibrant green.
Tsavorite and demantoid
Tsavorite garnet offers a vivid green reminiscent of emerald without emerald's typical inclusions, while demantoid garnet shows exceptional fire and sometimes distinctive 'horsetail' inclusions valued by collectors.
Durability and treatment
Most garnets are untreated and reasonably durable at 6.5–7.5 Mohs, making them practical for everyday jewelry, though demantoid can be more brittle.
Buyer checklist
- ✓ Ask whether the stone is untreated, as is typical for garnet
- ✓ Request lab documentation for rare types like tsavorite or demantoid
- ✓ Check hardness suitability for the intended piece of jewelry
